Rick Rack!

Whenever visiting a second-hand store, I look for sewing notions. My girls and I collect them but have no real plan for their use. We just like the look!

Molly loves zippers, Sarah goes for buttons and I adore rick rack!

There's just something about it--especially the name!

The zig-zaggyness is delightful! The colors are luscious and it comes in all sizes from teeny tiny to fat and juicy!

When I began making the Never Ending Christmas Craft with vintage Dresden plate quilt circles, the plan was to just zig zag it on the fabric with contrasting thread. But I wasn't satisfied with the effect--just not enough zig in the zag! Then I remembered the box of rick rack stashed away with other useless, but neat stuff I had cluttered the closets with this summer, and dug it out!

I love the way it dressed up the edges--this wreath reminded me of a gingerbread house when I was (finally) finished.

The real treat was in the label. First off, this particular package of rick rack only cost 15 cents, vs. the modern package, which is over 2.00. Thankfully, it is colorfast--no worries of the color running and spoiling your new creation! It is 100 percent cotton--Modern day version is polyester.
When I flipped over the label, look what I found!

Patterns for a spiffy "Pixie" beach cape and matching bag or clever suspenders to perk up your sports costume!

How old is this stuff anyway!

If you want to know more about rick rack, click here. It used to be hand crocheted. I can't imagine....

If you're interested in viewing more vintage thingies, and to show off your own, visit the Colorado Lady and sign up with Mr. Linky--do it. It's fun!

I loved this post! The labels and the patterns are really neat. I would bet this is pretty old for it to only cost 15 cents.

I like vintage sewing notions too, but these days they are snapped up quickly. I have a fondness for buttons!

Welcome to VTT. I am glad you are here! You are so right, it is fun!!

I've always loved Rick Rack, it just looks happy, doesn't it? It adds so much to the piece that you're working on. What fun collections to do with your girls. Keep thrifting, that's where new memories are made with old stuff.

My downfall in vintage sewing notions happens to be buttons and I have quite a stash of older ric rac and other goodies as well..I love your dresden plate..it's just beautiful. Happy VTT and have a great day

Oh the rick rack really completes that piece of handiwork. I remember my mother making our bedroom curtains and putting rick rack on them. I think she had a thing for rick rack as she put it on anything she could!

I too love rick rack. My first memories of it are on the dresses made of feed sacks that my mother made for me and on grandmas aprons. You are right, it just isn't the same as it used to be. M

There is a fantastic antique shop in my town and the lady who runs it is well into her 80s. I was looking for some ribbon to finish something and she opened up a huge box of ric-rac. I didn't know it was called that and apparently you can't buy it anymore. I bought a few meters of different colours and one has a label that I didn't think to turn over - you know what I'll be doing when I get home!

I love the cute patterns! Don't you wish things were simple now like they were back then? You know what else I love, your Mrs. Beasley doll! I had one when I was was little but somehow lost it in my travels.
