It's Les' fault!

We are in the big city to attend a music conference and take a mini-vacation with just the two of us. We had a great time last night going to the movie and having a hotdog and popcorn for supper!

We came back to our lovely hotel room that is brand new and admired the very modern decor of lime green, orange and turquoise. Oh wait, perhaps that's not brand new decor??? There is frosted glass and sliding doors and the lobby has angular furniture arranged in a circular pattern surrounded by sheer lime green curtains with a iridescent look--kinda underwaterish.

So we went to bed and I did my normal hotel rituals--pull the curtains tight, put the extra towel down in front of the door to block the light. Go to bed. Get up. Put the throw pillows from the couch along the bottom of the window in a vain attempt to block out the extra light from outside. I do appreciate the well-lighted parking lot. I'm pretty sure you could read a book out there, it is so bright. Then I went to bed.

And watched the two green lights blinking overhead in the smoke/fire alarm thingy on the ceiling. And stared at the green light from the flat screen tv. And glared at the light coming in from the peephole in the door. And tossed and turned in the light STILL emanating from around the curtain. And at last went to sleep.

And Les was snoring. But not regularly. And it was always the same tone. Perhaps about a middle C or a D if you want to go try it on the piano. I just figured he was having one of those music director dreams where he was giving his choir the note to come in on for an a capella number. I finally went to sleep.

Then about 4:00 a.m. I awakened for my regular nightly (early-morning) appointment in the bathroom. And he was still having that dream. And the blinking light on the ceiling and the glowing light from the tv and the peephole light all seemed to be brighter. And it was thundering and lighting and windy outside.

AND HE WAS STILL MAKING THAT CONFOUNDED NOISE.

I thought.

Then I realized it was coming from my right (he sleeps on my left), but with my 'hearing impairment' I couldn't figure out what it was. I thought perhaps it was my cell phone because today is his birthday and perhaps my calendar alarm was going off. So I got out of bed again, and checked my phone. Nope. That wasn't it.

So I got back in bed.

And about 5 minutes later I heard it again.

So I got up again. Checked the cell phone, checked the computer, looked up at the blinking light to see if perhaps it was red and we needed to evacuate the building because of a fire....

Went back to bed.

Heard it again.

As I threw back the covers I said, "What is that noise?" in my most loving, early morning, 'happy birthday to you' voice.

And he said, "It's air in the pipes from someone shaving."

Huh? At 5 minute intervals for the last lots of nightime hours?

So he explained to me that it was a new building and there was probably air in the pipes in the wall and perhaps we could move to another room later. Whatever.

And then we heard the noise again.

I tried to ignore it.

I closed my eyes, took regular breaths, counting to focus my brain away from the confounded noise and blinking lights and glowing window. And I almost drifted off to sleep when the note sounded again.

And again.

And again.

And again......

I prayed for the Romanian missionaries. I prayed for Crystal's brother. I thanked God for my wonderful husband and his family and all the blessing's He (God, not Les) had bestowed. I prayed for friends.

And while I certainly needed the prayer time, I really, really wanted to go back to sleep.

Les turned on the tv and I got up one more time to investigate the room, thinking that perhaps I was too bleary eyed before to find the real problem.

And that's when I saw Les' phone.

And flipped it open.

To see that HE had two messages from people wishing him a Happy Birthday since 12 something A.M.

And it was HIS phone that had been vibrating all night long--It's ring having been silenced during the movie the night before.

And I handed it to him and growled, "Happy Birthday." And got back in bed.

And he laughed. At regular 5 minute intervals, he would start shaking again, just like the vibrating phone.

So I decided to get up and post this ridiculous event so maybe I would laugh too. Later.

And I think I'm going to have to come back to this room at some point today and have a nap.

And he's going to have to buy me something really great for his birthday!
