Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

Today while taking the dog out, I noticed that some branches were broken from one of my sunflower plants. I call them 'branches' because the plant is at least eight feet tall and 'stems' seems to be too wimpy to fit!

The flower bed is Patch's domain in the summer and I don't know if she was chasing a bug or something and attempted to climb the tree or the wind broke them off, but I decided to save the flowers.

In the country, sunflowers fill the ditches of every road. When I was growing up, sunflowers were weeds! So it's kind of funny that I am now growing, watering, weeding, feeding and nurturing these 'weeds' in my flower bed! I love the giant sunflowers whose heads are almost a foot across. I've grown those before but I've never had much success getting them to stand up! Their floppy heads kind of weigh them down.

Last year, I bought a packet of seeds with variegated sunflowers--brown, yellow, orange, a kind of greeny yellow--and planted some along my back fence. I planted the few left over seeds this year and some came up volunteer. Those 'weeds' make me happy every time I look at them and I am continually amazed by the beauty of the different colors. The bees loved them too! They can be seen all day flying from flower to flower, weighted down by the bright yellow pollen.

Have a great day and figure out a way you can enjoy some 'weeds' that crop up in your life!

Hi Dawn,
I also have sunflowers. It's my first year of growing them and I am hooked. I did a quick post a while back on how I saved mine from breaking. Pantyhose! I took a pair of scissors and tore the hose into stips. It gives the flowers some support (I tied the heavier ones to a pole) with some flexibility.
