My Vintage Find

When I was a little girl, my grandma had a wonderful hat, purse (pocketbook!) and shoes that we loved playing dress up in. They were made of some type of silky fabric with a floral feel to it and woven with gold thread. The pocketbook was a clutch, the shoes were pointy toe stilettos and the hat was an adorable thing that sat right on top of your head. Picture Jackie Kennedy here!

After I became an adult and realized the awesomeness that those accessories represented, I asked Grandma whatever became of those lovely things. "I burned them in the barrel," she said. This was at a family dinner and you should have heard the gasps from her granddaughters! We were horrified. I've often thought of the awesome things found in Grandma's closet and am still sad at the disappearance of something that made even little girls like us feel so elegant and chic.

The Presbyterian Women's Rummage sale was this weekend! I've mentioned them before. We always find awesome stuff and Saturday was no different!

I'm trying to not bring home every neat thing that catches my eye--I'm trying to be discerning. It's a losing battle usually, but I did turn down a porcelein child's tea set, an awesome handmade pottery pitcher, a sackful of upholstery samples that would have been excellent for crafting, wooden shutters that didn't fit any window I own but might come in useful someday......

But imagine my delight when I stumbled across this dress! An awesome remnant from the past--missing the hat, shoes and pocketbook, but a treasure just the same!

It's the same type of fabric woven with gold threads that my grandma's stuff was made of! This two piece ensemble consists of a sleeveless, lined knee-length dress with a short jacket with 3/4 length sleeves. The fabric is a cream colored background with mint green flowers and leaves. I've taken pictures all over my house, trying to find good lighting. What I needed was a sunny day and a model!

Someone's labor of love, handmade, fully lined, tiny loop buttonholes and look at the trim around the neck of the jacket! I can't think what it's called right now but it is a self-fabric welting type thingy (!) that is beautifully set in the seam so perfectly! I love to sew and know that all these details can be a nightmare!

Did I mention that this does not fit anyone in our house and likely never will? But at only one dollar--this nostalgic trip down memory lane was too good to pass up! I can't wait to show my sisters and cousin! They will be soooooo jealous!

Now, head on over the The Apron Queen and see what other vintage lovers are sharing!

Love it! It is a fabulous outfit. Looks like something my mother would have worn in the early 60's!

That is just lovely. So sad that it doesn't fit anyone--that's the rub with vintage clothes, I've found--they're tiny!!

That is a great find! WE used to play dress up in stuff like that!

I can't believe the stitching, that is amazing...no one does it quite like that anymore do they?

What in the world was she thinking...burned it! I know what you mean, my father in law tossed all kinds of vintage treasures in a creek bed. I still cringe when I think of that. I am sitting out on VTT this week, I did not get my post done in time….wanted to stop by and say hello.

oh that is a beautiful suit! Have you seen Breakfast at Tiffany's? In the party scene there's a lady who arrives at the party with a suit on just like it but it's gold :-)

That's great! I was born just a scoche too late to experience all the dressing up. When we go out to eat at a nice restaurant and everyone is wearing flip flops and shorts, it makes me nostalgic for the days when going out was a treat and everyone dressed up. Anyway, sorry to ramble. I enjoyed your VTT. :)

Great storytelling. Wonderful bargain. It's great to stroll down memory lane for $1 or less.
